Someone looked at my home router and said it straight to my face: "that's a $60 microwave."

They weren't entirely wrong. The hardware is modest, memory is limited, the processor was built for home traffic, nothing that impresses on a spec sheet. If the question is "is this a high end chip," the honest answer is no.

But that person was judging the brain by the size of the case.

Yesterday my AI and I spent a full day doing something most "enterprise" setups never do to themselves: a complete, read only forensic audit, verified through two independent methods. Every finding documented with evidence, root cause, risk, and recommendation, before touching a single line of configuration.

The result: 14 findings identified. The most critical ones closed the same day, not because we "fixed them fast," but because every change was verified before and after it was applied, with a rollback ready in case something went wrong. Zero downtime. Zero surprises.

The interesting part wasn't discovering that the router was poorly designed. It wasn't. The interesting part was something more honest: good engineering, over time, accumulates silent drift. Documentation that no longer matches reality. Monitoring that quietly breaks for weeks without anyone noticing. Decisions flagged as "pending review" that no one ever looks at again.

That's the real risk in cybersecurity. Not a lack of good ideas at design time, but the lack of a process that checks, with the same discipline, whether those ideas still hold up months later.

That's the question any business owner should ask before thinking about buying new equipment: not how much what they already have cost, but when was the last time someone reviewed, with real evidence, whether it still works the way it was designed to.

So my answer to whoever called it a microwave is this: they're right about the case. They're wrong about the brain. What actually separates a secure network from a vulnerable one isn't how much the equipment cost, it's whether someone, with the right discipline, keeps asking it the hard questions.
